Vegetables and poultry from an off-grid ridge farm.

Montani Farms is 80 acres of West Virginia hillside. We grow greenhouse and market-garden crops and raise poultry — all on our own solar power.

What we grow

Two things, done carefully: crops under cover and birds on the hill.

Greenhouse & market garden

Our high tunnel stretches the season at both ends, so beds keep producing well after frost settles into the hollows. Outside it, the open market-garden beds carry the summer crops.

Poultry

Chicks are brooded here on the farm, then move out to a coop built tight — this is fisher, coyote and bear country, and we build for it.

How we farm

Working with the hill, not against it.

Our own power

The farm runs off-grid on a solar array and battery bank. The lights in the brooder and the fans in the tunnel are sun-powered.

A longer season

Under the high tunnel we start earlier in spring and harvest later into winter than open ground allows in these hills.

A working woodland

Most of the farm is hardwood forest — black walnut, elderberry, white oak — and we farm alongside it rather than clearing it.

Montani Farms Games

We also grow games.

Long winter nights on an off-grid farm go into building games for mixed reality. Our first one is in development for Meta Quest.

Loop the Room

Build toy-car tracks right in your own room — loops, ramps and drops over the furniture (and around the dog) — then let it roll.
